2 Participants Guess Exact Time for Coach Bev CDCES Exam & 7 Remote Exam Tips

I feel like I just medaled in my 7th CDCES Olympics!

Here is the snapshot that the proctor took before I started my remote exam. You can see my cute little “support” dog sleeping on the chair in the background.

It was 12:20 pm Pacific Time when I clicked “start” on the exam. Given the benefits of technology, a webcam, my computer, and lots of technical support, I took advantage of the Live Remote Proctoring option and marathoned through the CDCES Exam from my upstairs office.

I wore my lucky purple blouse and felt buoyed with my little Chiweenie dog (Choochi) nearby. With each of the 200 questions. I considered the intention, got rid of juicy false answers, and chose the BEST answer. I was challenged, especially by the vignettes and I encountered some “weird” questions, but I kept moving forward and trusting myself.

As I read through the questions, I felt really great about the content in our Online University, Virtual Course and test taking toolkits. Our course topics, content, poll questions and quizzes will definitely help students be prepared for this exam!

Coach Beverly

At 1:56 pm, exactly 96 minutes later, I submitted my exam and a green button popped up, saying that I had PASSED!

I celebrated by eating a handmade chocolate candy (okay, it was two) and taking a walk out in my favorite field.

Two participants won FREE admission to our DiabetesEd Specialist Virtual Conference with their Best Guess!

After this little celebration, I reviewed the over 300 submitted guesses from all of you. How long it would take for me to complete the exam? TWO people had chosen 96 minutes, WOW, I couldn’t believe it.

Congratulations Sadek and Lauren – You have won FREE registration to our DiabetesEd Specialist Deluxe Virtual Conference, taking place April 13-15, 2022. Thank you for participating in this event and congratulations on creating the BEST answer.

If you submitted your answer, we have great news. We are extending our “Spreading the Love Sale” for another week so, you can save 15% off the DiabetesEd Specialist Deluxe Virtual Conference through February 23rd, 2022.

7 Tips if you Choose Remote Proctoring

Even though taking the exam from the comfort of home was less stressful in some aspects (no driving to the test site and a comfortable environment), it did take some extra preparation. The organization that administers the exam, (PSI) still has a few kinks to work out to make the process seamless. However, with a little preparation, you can make sure to have a successful and positive experience. The good news is that the tech staff at PSI are very helpful and knowledgeable.

  1. You will need a computer, webcam, and quiet space.
  2. Plan on spending one to two hours a few days ahead of time, going through the instructions on setting up your computer using the information emailed to you ahead of time from PSI (testing administrators).
  3. Be at your computer at least an hour ahead on your exam day to double check everything one more time. Then, about 40 minutes before the exam start time, call PSI technology support so they can remotely log on and double check your computer set up and get you signed into the exam portal (this was a lifesaver for me).
  4. Clear your workspace ahead of time, making sure there is no lose papers or notes. You are only allowed a writing implement, a white piece of paper and a glass of water.
  5. Use the restroom ahead of time and watch caffeine intake before the exam (since there are no breaks).
  6. Take a deep calming breath and GO For IT!
  7. Check out our blog post for more info on taking the test remotely.

Thank you, everyone. We so appreciate your enthusiasm and contributions to diabetes care.

What is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist?

Read More: What is a CDCES?

First awarded in 1986, as Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) credential and in 2020 with a new name: Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) to more accurately reflect the specialty. CDCES has become a standard of excellence for the delivery of quality diabetes education. Those who hold this certification are known to possess comprehensive knowledge of and experience in diabetes prevention, management, and prediabetes.

Becoming a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) is one of the best professional and personal decisions I have ever made.” – Coach Beverly Thomassian, RN, MPH, CDCES, BC-ADM

Why become a CDCES?
Three Reasons from Coach Beverly

Read More: 3 Reasons to Become a CDCES

The best part of becoming a CDCES is working with my colleagues and people living with diabetes. As diabetes educators, we hear compelling and beautiful life stories. I am astounded by the barriers they face and inspired by their adaptability, problem-solving skills, and resilience.

– Coach Beverly Thomassian, RN, MPH, CDCES, BC-ADM

Reason 1: CDCES is a widely recognized certification by employers and health care professionals throughout the U.S.  This credential demonstrates a specialized and in-depth knowledge in the prevention and treatment of individuals living with pre-diabetes and diabetes.

Reason 2: Currently, 10% of people in the U.S. have diabetes and another 35% have pre-diabetes which means 45% of Americans are running around with elevated blood glucose levels.  Given this epidemic, there will be plenty of future job opportunities.

Reason 3: Having my CDCES along with my nursing degree, has opened many doors of opportunity; from working as an inpatient Diabetes Nurse Specialist in a hospital to working as a Manager of Diabetes Education in the outpatient setting to starting my own consulting company.
