This year we had a tremendous response, with nearly 50 applicants who are making amazing differences in their communities.
We had originally planned to offer two scholarships. However, after reading through all of the applications, there were so many exceptional candidates, we decided to expand our reach and offer a total of SIX winners this year; two Exemplar Winners for our Deluxe Virtual Conference Registration and four for our Basic Virtual Conference Registration.

The goal of these scholarships are three-fold:
Lori Jackson is a recipient of our “Making a Difference Exemplar Scholarship” because of Lori’s dedication to her community.
Lori Jackson works as an RN at her local Tribal Health Center where she serves a diverse community of various cultural backgrounds. She says that providing diabetes care is her “lifelong passion and calling to help my community and others whom we all share mother earth with, to live their best lives.”
?Lori creates care plans that recognize each individual’s unique needs. She has designed a person-centered DSME program where she hosts weekly support groups for people living with diabetes. She also leads a weekly “coffee chat” open to the community where each person can pop in and ask general questions. Her commitment to providing outstanding and compassionate care for her community made her a top-level candidate for this scholarship.
Jalak Patel is also a recipient of our “Making a Difference Exemplar Scholarship” for being an advocate for her community.
Jalak Patel works as an RD at a Free Medical Clinic where she provides direct care to those who are low or no income and have access to limited resources. She also volunteers at local churches and temples, elementary schools, and with her Dietetics Association where she provides free cooking classes, meal planning workshops and helped build community gardens.
?Jalak advocates at the state level to expand coverage for those who are insured under Medicaid so they can have wider access to nutritional services. Her advocacy and commitment to expanding access for those who have limited resources make her an obvious top contender for this scholarship.
Their contributions to improving diabetes care are outstanding. We are so impressed by their dedication and the good work they are doing in their communities.

I feel like I just medaled in my 7th CDCES Olympics!
It was 12:20 pm Pacific Time when I clicked “start” on the exam. Given the benefits of technology, a webcam, my computer, and lots of technical support, I took advantage of the Live Remote Proctoring option and marathoned through the CDCES Exam from my upstairs office.
I wore my lucky purple blouse and felt buoyed with my little Chiweenie dog (Choochi) nearby. With each of the 200 questions. I considered the intention, got rid of juicy false answers, and chose the BEST answer. I was challenged, especially by the vignettes and I encountered some “weird” questions, but I kept moving forward and trusting myself.
As I read through the questions, I felt really great about the content in our Online University, Virtual Course and test taking toolkits. Our course topics, content, poll questions and quizzes will definitely help students be prepared for this exam!

At 1:56 pm, exactly 96 minutes later, I submitted my exam and a green button popped up, saying that I had PASSED!
I celebrated by eating a handmade chocolate candy (okay, it was two) and taking a walk out in my favorite field.
After this little celebration, I reviewed the over 300 submitted guesses from all of you. How long it would take for me to complete the exam? TWO people had chosen 96 minutes, WOW, I couldn’t believe it.

Even though taking the exam from the comfort of home was less stressful in some aspects (no driving to the test site and a comfortable environment), it did take some extra preparation. The organization that administers the exam, (PSI) still has a few kinks to work out to make the process seamless. However, with a little preparation, you can make sure to have a successful and positive experience. The good news is that the tech staff at PSI are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Becoming Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) provides an opportunity for diabetes specialists with an advanced degree in their field (plus a professional license as an advanced practice nurse, registered dietitian, registered pharmacist, or provider) to increase the breadth and depth of their diabetes knowledge. The scope of advanced diabetes practice includes management skills such as medication adjustment, medical nutrition therapy, exercise planning, counseling for behavior management, and psychosocial issues.
