Yesterday, we shared our blog about the CMS Updates For CGM Coverage. These updates made us feel hopeful that people with diabetes would have fewer barriers and improved access to CGM devices.
After sharing this post, members of our community let us know that although CMS guidelines have been relaxed in writing, this hasn’t translated into better access on the ground.
We are hoping to open up a dialogue around this topic and hear from our community members about how these guidelines apply to real-life situations.
If you have information to share, please fill out our brief survey by clicking here.
We will send a follow-up post next week with updates.

Certification Exams & COVID-19
Many people in our community are wondering how the shelter-in-place due to COVID-19 impacts any previously scheduled certification exams, so we wanted to provide an update from PSI, the testing centers for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE).
The PSI centers for testing closed on March 19 and will be closed till at least April 13th, but will reassess this timeline, as necessary.
PSI states, “Effective immediately, candidates can reschedule up to and including the day of testing at no penalty and no documentation required.”
Due to this closure, all rescheduling rules and no show policies will be relaxed until April 30th; you can reschedule your test till then at no cost.
To avoid long wait times, PSI encourages you to reschedule online through their website. Though you can also reschedule by calling: 833-333-4755 Call Centers are open: 4:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. PDT M-F, 6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. PDT Sat-Sun

The CDC has released its 2020 annual National Diabetes Statistics Report.
This report showed that diabetes in the U.S. in on the rise. Approximately 13% of adults live with diabetes, with cases rising from 9.5% in 2002 to 13% in 2016. Many (7.3 million) are unaware that they have diabetes, as determined by A1c levels or fasting plasma glucose.
The age-adjusted data indicate that diabetes diagnoses can trend higher depending on socioeconomic status, age, and ethnicity. For example, the percent of adults with diabetes increases with age. 26.8% of those over age 65 have diabetes and new cases of type 1 and type 2 have risen in younger people.
From 2002 to 2015, incidences of type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents rose, with the largest increases of type 2 diabetes among Black non-Hispanic youth.
The report also found that cases are highest among “Native Americans and Alaskan Natives at 14.7%, Hispanic adults at 12.5%, and black adults at 11.7%. The risk increases for those from a lower socioeconomic status.
“Specifically, 13.3% of adults with less than a high school education had diagnosed diabetes vs. 9.7% of those with a high school education and 7.5% of those with more than a high school education” the report states.
The CDC explains that by analyzing the “data from this report [we] can help focus critical type 2 diabetes prevention and diabetes management efforts across the nation.”
