We had an enthusiastic response to our scholarships, with over 60 applicants for our Virtual DiabetesEd Training Conference on April 17th-19th, 2024.
It is always a very difficult decision for the judges to determine the top applicants. We read each application in careful detail considering the financial need, person-centered language, inclusivity, impact, volunteerism, and readiness to take the CDCES exam.
We awarded a total of FIVE top awards this year plus bronze awards to remaining applicants.
Bronze Awards to all applicants – $150 off registration for any online course or course package.
Shana is one of our “Making a Difference Exemplar Scholarship” recipient for being a dedicated advocate for her community in Houston, TX. As a Registered Dietician, Shana is committed to addressing health disparities among the diverse population she serves through a holistic approach that incorporates the various cultures that make up her community. In her work she actively addresses those impacted by food insecurity through food distribution in high-need areas and helps to organize mobile food pantries to remote communities. Additionally, she conducts educational workshops for budget-friendly meal planning and recipes for common food items found at food banks, while also assisting those who are eligible to enroll in SNAP or WIC. Additionally, she provides personalized nutrition counseling and group educational sessions that are culturally relevant and include dietary practices for Latinx and Black communities, while also coordinating Healthcare Fairs and physical activity programs. Her commitment to person-centered diabetes care and prevention is undeniable and it is clear that, as she puts it, it is her “my mission to make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by diabetes.”
On behalf of the team at Diabetes Education Services, we congratulate Shana!
Pilar is our second “Making a Difference Exemplar” scholarship recipient. She states, “Ever since elementary school, I have aspired to evolve into a CDCES.” As the daughter of someone with Type 2 Diabetes, she witnessed the inadequacies of the current healthcare system in humanizing care provided to individuals with diabetes. She goes on to say that our current system “often pathologizes valid behaviors, particularly those belonging to the intersectionality of marginalized identities lacking the privileges upon which many diabetes recommendations rely.”
In Pilar’s role as a nutritionist within a federally qualified health center, she serves a diverse community primarily composed of Cantonese, Mam, and Spanish speakers, many of whom are undocumented individuals or newly settled residents, grappling with significant challenges to accessing various social determinants of health, particularly in terms of food and housing insecurity. The health concerns include prediabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes, and multiple comorbidities. This dynamic range of health issues necessitates a tailored and holistic approach to nutrition counseling and support. Pilar’s daily responsibilities encompass a spectrum of activities aimed at providing comprehensive care, including nutrition counseling, case management, and group support using the shared medical model.
She actively provides personalized diabetes education sessions tailored to her community’s cultural and linguistic diversity. This involves acknowledging and respecting the unique backgrounds of patients, with an awareness of potential cultural influences on perceptions of food and health.
Pilar is passionate about trauma-informed, weight-inclusive, anti-diet diabetes education, which stems from multiple personal and professional reckonings. We agree that Pilar’s unique perspective, commitment to inclusivity, holistic healthcare vision, dedication to continuous learning, community impact goals, proven leadership, and a well-defined future vision make her a standout candidate for this scholarship. We are confident that achieving her CDCES will amplify her impact in diabetes education and contribute to the well-being of individuals in her community.
On behalf of the team at Diabetes Education Services, we congratulate Pilar!
