Diabetes Education Boot Camp – 2 Day Intensive
Our two-day, intensive Diabetes Education Boot Camp offers participants an interactive and engaging experience. It’s like having your own personal Diabetes Coach. Within each topic, Beverly Thomassian, RN, MPH, CDCES, BC-ADM, highlights the critical diabetes content that you can immediately apply to your clinical setting. She also provides multiple poll questions to engage students in assessing their knowledge and encourage active learning.
Coach Beverly helps you drill through the vast diabetes education content with our intensive two-day Boot Camp, while keeping it focused and fun! You will finish this intensive program more confident in your clinical practice and ready to consider taking the Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Exam.
Intended Audience: This intensive course is designed for educators, including RNs, RDs, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants and other health care providers interested in achieving excellence in diabetes care through a state-of-the-art review of current diabetes standards of practice. This course is also beneficial for those interested in becoming Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists® or pursuing Advanced Certification, BC-ADM. We also invite those in looking for hours to renew or apply for the CDCES* or BC-ADM exam.

Diabetes Education Boot Camp Intensive – Day 1 Agenda
8:00 am – 9:45 am: Current State of Diabetes, Pathophysiology and Diabetes Diagnosis
Diabetes is complicated! discuss underpinnings of pancreas dysfunction and the different types of diabetes. Insulin resistance is addressed as well as the diagnostic criteria for the diabetes.
Objectives:
• State the impact of diabetes in our communities
• Explore insulin resistance and vascular disease
• Discus key concepts in pathophysiology of type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes
• Review Diabetes Diagnostic Criteria
10:00 am to 12:00 pm – ADA Standards of Care, Diabetes Prevention, Medications for Type 2
Highlights critical content of the American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes and provides critical teaching points and content for Diabetes Educators. Delve into diabetes prevention and medications for Type 2 diabetes and plenty of case studies.
Objectives:
• State 5 critical content areas of the ADA Standards of Care
• Discuss diabetes prevention strategies.
• Describe targeted medication interventions based on individual assessments
1 pm to 3:30 pm – Medication Algorithms and CV Risk Factor Reduction
Highlights the array of oral and injectable medications to treat hyperglycemia for people with type 2 diabetes. We explore clinical issues to consider when determining the best strategy to improve glucose control and reduce cardiovascular risk. We discuss cost, side effects, complexity and other factors into consideration.
Objectives:
• Describe the main action, dosing and side effects of the different classes of diabetes medications
• Highlight the key elements of the Medication Guidelines by AACE and ADA.
• List the clinical factors to consider when determining the best strategy to improve glucose, blood pressure and lipid management.
3:45 pm to 4:30 pm – The Language of Diabetes
Based on powerful research, there is growing movement within diabetes education and beyond, to rethink the words we use and the approaches we take when providing counsel to people with diabetes. Let’s lift people up by choosing language that is non-judgmental and person centered.
Objectives:
• Learn the old-fashioned diabetes phrases, words and approaches that can be left behind.
• Describe diabetes language that is respectful, inclusive, person-centered and imparts hope.
• Practice communicating about diabetes using phrases free from judgement with a focus on a strength-based approach.
Diabetes Education Boot Camp Intensive – Day 2 Agenda
8:00 am – 10:00 am – Insulin Therapy – From Basal/Bolus to Pattern Management
Reviews the effective use of insulin therapy to improve glucose control. Learn how to look at glucose patterns and determine appropriate insulin adjustment strategies. Also included are formulas to calculate therapy based on national guidelines.
Objectives:
• Using basal/bolus insulin therapy to improve glucose control
• Glucose patterns and adjustment strategies
• Incorporating national guidelines into practice
10:30 am – 12:00 pm – Medical Nutrition Therapy
Reviews the latest nutrition guidelines and strategies to individualize this information based on the individual assessment. Different approaches to healthy eating and fad diets will be addressed. Included is a discussion on metabolic surgery, gastroparesis and disordered eating.
Objectives:
• List Nutrition guidelines and weight loss strategies
• Discuss individualized approaches medical nutrition therapy
• Describe nutritional barriers and behavior change approaches
1:00 pm to 2:30 pm – Keeping Active with Diabetes and Lower Extremity Assessment
Review the benefits of exercise and focus on the latest national guidelines for activity, strengthening and balance. Will also include instruction on how to conduct a lower extremity assessment and critical teaching points to keep lower extremities healthy
Objectives:
• Describe exercise benefits, guidelines and strategies
• State three exercise considerations
• Demonstrate how to conduct a lower extremity assessment
2:45 pm to 4:00 pm – Monitoring, Hypoglycemia, Sick Days and Hospitalization
We explore the ins and outs of monitoring and provide a review of hypoglycemia and sick day management. Content will also boost your knowledge of inpatient approaches to improve glycemia.
• Strategies to minimize hypoglycemia and promote glucose monitoring
• Identify sick day and inpatient management strategies to keep blood glucose in balance.
4:00 pm – 4:30 pm – Test Taking Coach Session (optional)
Join your test taking Coach Beverly, as she reviews a variety of sample CDCES test questions. She will explain how to dissect the question, eliminate wrong answers and avoid getting lured in by juicy answers.
Accreditation Info: This program is approved for 16 Contact Hours for nurses and 14 CPE, Level III for RDs. Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # 12640 and Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), Provider # DI002. Need hours for your CDCES? Since we are recognized by CDR, all hours earned can be used toward CDCES, regardless of profession.

As president of Diabetes Education Services, Beverly Thomassian believes that we can improve diabetes care through education, advocacy and curiosity. As a diabetes coach, she promotes excellence in care through her live courses and webinar presentations. Beverly is a Diabetes Nurse Specialist and is Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management. She is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) and a visiting professor at California State University, Chico.
Beverly is a leader in field of diabetes. In 1998 she launched her own consulting company, Diabetes Education Services (DES). The goal of DES is to support health care professionals in their journey to advance their careers in diabetes. This support is provided through live and online training programs, free webinars, one-to-one correspondence and consultation. To date, Beverly has helped thousands of health care professionals achieve their dream of becoming Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
