As a member of the helping profession, I have attended dozens of seminars and read more books about how to effectively work with clients. It seems insufficient consideration is ever provided to the practitioners themselves in these trainings. Instead, we are provided with dry and often repetitive intervention models that prioritize efficiency of service over providing true help. With this work, Mrs. Thomassian takes into account this too often neglected aspect of a professional helping relationship by focusing on the shared human experiences we have with those we hope to help. In Healing Through Connection, the author asks the reader to consider the softer places of their professional expression that exist outside of the rigidity of more traditional practice models. Mrs. Thomassain maintains that it is in the context of our shared humanity that there can be a more holistic, effective, and meaningful healing that takes place for all involved. I appreciate deeply her courage to be authentic and model her own experiences that have given rise to this approach as it validates that she "walks the walk." This is an important book to promote more meaning and healing in our work for those we hope to help as well as ourselves.

Healing through Connection sings with both resilience and inspiration. Beverly blends personal stories with gentle suggestions of how readers can apply the lessons she has learned to our own lives and practices. Her messages are useful ones not just to nursing, but to all caring professionals (I am a teacher.) Like a cup of tea and a warm hug, reading this book helped me to exhale.

I had the privilege of hearing Beverly speak at a recent conference, where she shared insights from her beautiful book Healing Through Connection. I also have the honor of knowing her personally through our collaboration on a meaningful diabetes-related project. Beverly is not only an extraordinary professional dedicated to educating people with diabetes, but she is also a gifted educator for the educators. This is exactly what our field needs: someone who leads with compassion, wisdom, and authenticity. On my flight back from Alaska to Chicago, I began reading Healing Through Connection and was deeply moved. Beverly’s writing is honest, human, and profoundly inspiring. She shares her personal journey as both a person and a health educator, with all its ups and downs, bitterness and sweetness, offering valuable lessons in optimism, resilience, and empathy along the way. For me, this book served as a poignant reminder of the heart behind our work. The stories from rural America were not only educational but also incredibly touching; they brought tears to my eyes because they resonated so deeply with the work I do in our diabetes clinic in Chicago. Thank you, Beverly, for sharing your gifts, your wisdom, and your stories. Healing Through Connection is a must-read for every health professional who wants to bring more humanity, compassion, and purpose into their care. I will be recommending it to all my colleagues.

I think Beverly Thomassian's new book "Healing Through Connection " should be on every Healthcare Provider's book shelf. I am on the other side of being a provider, I have been a client/patient. Beverly is to the diabetic what Jane Goodall was to the chimpanzee's, someone who gives you hope!!

Healing through Connection is deeply personal and moving. Bev’s lived experience forms the foundation for the empathy she’s cultivated over years in the field. With honesty and authenticity, she shares moments of doubt, even after 25 years as a leader, which helps normalize fear and imposter feelings as part of the professional journey, not limitations. Healing through Connection is like having a wise mentor in my pocket—grounding, encouraging, and genuinely empowering.
