  • More than 30 million Americans have diabetes and approximately 7.4 million depend on insulin.
  • Diagnosed diabetes in the U.S. cost $327 billion in 2017, a 26 percent increase in five years.
  • Between 2002-2013, the average price of insulin nearly tripled, creating financial hardships for people who rely on it to survive.
  • In much of Europe, insulin costs about a sixth of what it does in the United States.
  • Some people with diabetes are cutting back on or skipping doses of insulin – or foregoing other necessities to pay for insulin – which puts their lives and health at risk.
  • People with diabetes are at significant risk for serious complications including kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, blindness and lower-limb amputations.

Insulin Cost – Standard 9 acknowledges that increasing insulin expense is contributing to steadily growing out of pocket costs.  As such, the ADA states that for people with type 2 on insulin,

“NPH and Regular insulin may be the appropriate choice of therapy and clinicians should be familiar with it’s use.”

This section also includes a Average Wholesale Pricing (AWP) for oral diabetes medications and insulin which are very enlightening a worth a review.

2013, the average price of insulin nearly
tripled.

encourages high list prices.
+ As list prices increase, the profits of
the intermediaries in the insulin
supply chain (wholesalers, PBMs,
pharmacies) increase since each may
receive a rebate, discount, or fee calculated
as a percentage of the list price.
